Lincolnville
School Events
Lincolnville is celebrating its 200th anniversary this
year, and in addition to the town events planned for June, the students
at Lincolnville Central School have had some unique opportunities
to learn about local history.
Town residents have shared some of their expertise and "historical
perspective" with students from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.
Some have come into classrooms to talk with a whole class, others
have participated in one-on-one interviews. Students in Grades
2 and 3 have created alphabet-style books of Lincolnville with the
aid of children's author Kelly Briggs, and the 5th graders have written
a special commemorative song with singer/songwriter Ann Dodson.
Other classes are planting trees, researching stone walls and creating
old-fashioned toys.
Special activities have been planned by each grade level, and range
from visiting the local historical society and former schoolhouse,
to participation in a yearlong research project. Each middle
school student has been part of a group researching some aspect of
the town. These projects were divided into the topics of environment,
people, performing arts, legends, politics, places, and visual arts.
Students have been busy creating specialized maps, videos, murals,
and a quilt. Others are writing stories, organizing a town clean
up, interviewing local citizens, or participating in a play to be
performed June 14.
There will be a major open house for the public to see the diversity
of middle school projects on May 23.
Song written by 5th Grade Class
Verse I
Our town started with two plantations
Then we became part of a Nation
Lincolnville was founded in 1802
Ducktrap Bridge became the new way through.
Chorus
Everybody knows, everybody here
All are welcome from far or near
Every spring mosquitoes appear
We've been a town for 200 years!
Verse II
Many people served in the Civil War
When they returned there were parties and more
People worked hard on land and sea
Fishing was the biggest industry.
Verse III
This year we celebrate our bicentennial
Tourists and blackflies are perennial
We're a small town with lots to do
Lincolnville will always welcome you.
